2024 Sees Surge in Schengen Visas Granted to Turkish Citizens
More Schengen Visas Approved for Turkish Nationals in 2024 Amid Drop in Rejection Rates
Turkish nationals, who have consistently ranked among the top Schengen visa applicants over the past decade, saw a notable increase in visa approval rates in 2024, signaling progress in long-standing talks with the EU over visa liberalisation.
Visa Approval Rates for Turkish Applicants Increased by 2.5% in 2024
According to official data, Turkish citizens submitted over one million Schengen visa applications in 2023, with 867,646 approvals, equating to an 82.17% approval rate. In 2024, the approval rate rose by 2.49 percentage points, marking a significant improvement.
Rejection rates also declined, dropping from 16.05% in 2023 to 14.50% in 2024. This indicates growing confidence in Turkish applications and a possible shift in visa issuance policies across Schengen member states.
Fewer Multiple-Entry Visas Despite Higher Total Approvals
Despite the positive trend in total approvals, the share of multiple-entry visas granted to Turkish nationals declined from 70.63% in 2023 to 65% in 2024. However, the total number of multiple-entry visas increased slightly — from 612,841 in 2023 to 645,583 in 2024. As a proportion of total applications, this marks a 1.55% decrease, suggesting a preference for single-entry visas despite the overall growth.
Greece Remains the Top Schengen Destination for Turkish Citizens
For the second consecutive year, Greece emerged as the leading destination for Turkish visa applicants. In 2024, 296,377 applications were submitted to Greek authorities — 25.2% of all applications filed by Turkish nationals.
Turkish citizens accounted for 41.7% of all visa applications received by Greece in 2024, far surpassing other nationalities. Germany ranked second, with 215,506 applications, representing 18.3% of Turkish applicants’ total.
Conclusion
The rise in Schengen visa approvals for Turkish nationals in 2024 reflects improved relations and increased processing efficiency, even as access to multiple-entry visas becomes more limited. With Greece and Germany as the most sought-after destinations, Turkish travelers remain a significant presence in the Schengen visa system.
