“Analysis released by the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) finds that 2.3 million refugees from Ukraine, or 44 per cent of those who have fled, have already applied for temporary protection in EU+ countries.2 The EUAA supports these efforts in Romania and almost all of its other eight operations,” EUAA reveals adding that soon new operatons will be launched in the Czech Republic and the Netherlands.
Meanwhile, almost all persons who apply for temporary protection are Ukrainian citizens, or 99 per cent, two-thirds of them women, and none of them is an unaccompanied minor.
Children are also the ones who benefit from temporary protection while they are offered access to public education. In addition, beneficiaries do not have to apply for asylum, which involves a longer procedure.
The EUAA has revealed that between February 21 and April 24, Ukrainian citizens submitted around 21,700 asylum applications in EU + countries, representing less than 1 per cent of Ukrainians who entered the EU during this period.
Besides, in the first week of March, almost 9,000 applications were filed shortly after the start of the war. This number then dropped very quickly after the Temporary Protection Directive was activated on March 4 and was rapidly implemented by national authorities with the support of the European Union Asylum Agency.
