Cyprus to Join Schengen Area in 2026, Confirms President Christodoulides
Cyprus is on track to become a member of the Schengen Area by 2026, according to President Nikos Christodoulides. Speaking to Cyprus Mail, the President emphasized that the move is a strategic decision and a key development for both Cyprus and the European Union.
He highlighted the importance of cooperation with the European Parliament to achieve this goal and expressed satisfaction following his recent meeting with Roberta Metsola, the President of the European Parliament.
Cyprus Strengthens Its Bid for Schengen Accession
Cyprus continues to make steady progress toward joining the border-free Schengen Zone. European Commissioner for Internal Affairs, Magnus Brunner, recently stated that the European Commission is closely monitoring Cyprus’ advancement and ongoing compliance with Schengen accession requirements.
So far, the European Union has allocated more than €292 million in funding under the 2021–2027 programme, aimed at strengthening Cyprus' border management, migration policies, and police cooperation.
Political Will and Technical Readiness
In a statement last month, Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos affirmed that significant progress has been made over the past two years under the current administration. He also stressed that Schengen membership remains a top political priority.
Earlier this year, President Christodoulides pledged that all technical conditions required for accession will be fulfilled by the end of 2025, enabling Cyprus to formally join the Schengen Area in 2026.
EU Membership Since 2004, Schengen Accession Still Pending
Cyprus has been a member of the European Union since 2004, yet it remains outside the Schengen Area. Accession to Schengen would mark a major milestone in the country’s European integration journey.
According to President Christodoulides, joining the Schengen Zone would also deliver significant economic benefits, particularly by boosting the tourism sector, which plays a vital role in Cyprus' economy.
