European Union Approves Phased Implementation of Entry/Exit System
EU to Gradually Implement Entry/Exit System to Strengthen Schengen Borders
Thanks to a recent agreement between the European Union Council and Parliament, member states will soon begin the gradual rollout of the Entry/Exit System (EES) — a new border management tool designed to record the entry and exit of non-EU nationals traveling to the Schengen Area.
“This is good news and will support our efforts to keep our borders safe,” said Polish Minister of the Interior and Administration, Tomasz Siemoniak.
Once operational, the EES will digitally log entries, exits, biometric data (including fingerprints and facial images), and passport details of all third-country nationals entering the EU for short stays, regardless of whether they are traveling visa-free.
Real-Time Monitoring and Security Enhancement
The system will also enable real-time access to travelers' personal and travel history, helping authorities to monitor overstays, detect identity fraud, and ensure compliance with Schengen rules.
Commenting on the importance of the system, EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner, stated:
“For the first time, we will have real-time, complete, and reliable information on who enters and leaves the Schengen Area. This will help us close gaps in the current system and strengthen mutual trust among the Member States.”
How the Gradual Rollout Will Work
Under the agreed framework, EES implementation will be phased over a 180-day transition period to avoid overwhelming border systems with a simultaneous launch across all member states.
By Day 30, countries must record at least 10% of all border crossings in the EES.
By Day 90, 35% of crossings must be registered, and biometric functions must be fully operational.
By Day 180, full registration of all travelers will be mandatory.
However, this phased approach is not obligatory. Member states that prefer to implement the system fully from day one will be permitted to do so.
Launch Expected in Autumn 2025
While an official start date for the EES has yet to be confirmed, Minister Siemoniak suggested that “October is our horizon,” indicating that the EU aims to launch the system in autumn 2025.
The EES is a critical part of the EU’s strategy to modernize border controls, improve migration management, and enhance security cooperation among Schengen countries.
