Norway Plans to End Family Reunification for Single Parents Over 60
The new decision may come following a draft submitted for consultation by the Ministry of Justice and Emergency Preparedness to apply respective changes to the Immigration Act’s rules on family immigration, AtoZSerwisPlus reports.
At present, single parents over the age of 60 with adult children in Norway are granted residence permits in family immigration in line with a special provision in the Immigration Act.
Through a statement, the Ministry of Justice and Preparedness said that the existing regulations on family immigration are based on the premise that the family must support itself. However, experience shows that more people in this group have to be taken care of by the Norwegian authorities.
The Ministry also said that single, elderly parents will continue to be able to apply for a visitor visa (90 days) or shorter residence permit (nine months) in order to visit adult children in Norway.
The consultation deadline expires on November 22, 2024.
Norway to Tighten Immigration Rules
In June this year, authorities in Norway announced plans to tighten immigration rules for parents and underaged siblings for unaccompanied minor children who have been granted asylum in the country.
Unfolding the proposal, the Norwegian Ministry of Justice and Emergency Preparedness said that the tightening of the rules for this group of people is important after the changes will stop family reunification with unaccompanied minor children in Norway if this is not in the best interest of the child who has been granted asylum.
At present, parents and underage siblings of unaccompanied minor children holding asylum status in Norway can be granted residence permits in Norway.
Yet, the Directorate of Immigration has registered several cases when unaccompanied minor children granted asylum in Norway do not want to live with their parents when they come to the country.
