Sweden: 19,367 Residence Permits Were Issued in April, Representing Over a Quarter of Permits Granted So Far in 2022
According to the monthly report published by the Swedish Migration Agency, the majority of permits were issued to asylum seekers, a total of 12,608 – representing 39 per cent of all permits issued during the fourth month of 2022.
Such application rates include requests filed under the Temporary Protection Directive, which includes Ukrainian nationals seeking international protection in the EU Member States due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
The second most residence permits were granted to applications or work purposes, a total of 3,659 – accounting for 29 per cent of all residence permits issued, while permits issued for family reunification purposes made up for the third most positive results, reaching 2,025 of those.
More residence permits have been issued in April than in the previous months of 2022, as more than one quarter (26.75 per cent) of all permits granted so far in 2022 were issued during this month.
Furthermore, 327 residence permits were issued for study purposes out of 1,754 issued in total this year. While 684 permits were issued to other European citizens, 64 permits were granted due to impediments to enforcement. Such rates show that residence permits issued due to impediments to enforcement have already reached 2021 levels by 11 per cent and made up for 22 per cent of all permits issued for this matter only during April.
These permits are issued in case someone cannot return to their country while having a permit due to specific reasons, thus, needing the existence of a decision to postpone the refusal of entry or expulsion order.
According to the statistics provider, Statista, the largest number of residence permits granted in Sweden in 2021 were related to work, reaching a total of 39,270. The second most common type of permit to be granted was for studying purposes, and it peaked at 14,034. This group also consists of permits issued for law on upper secondary education (four).
While other types of permits issued were related to the EEA agreement (5,653) and quota refugee (6,701), a total of 3,378 were issued to conventional refugees, making a total of 12,017 permits granted for international protection or other permits related to the matter.
A total of 24,189 permits were issued for family reunification, with those numbers including permits issued for adopted children (32) and family reunification refugees (4,142).

- Humanitarian grounds (446)
- Impediments to enforcing (574)
- Temporary permits (104)
