Sweden Imposes New Requirements for Citizenship Applicants
Sweden Introduces Stricter Citizenship Requirements to Bolster National Security
The Swedish Migration Agency has rolled out new, stricter procedures for processing citizenship applications, introducing enhanced identity checks and requiring more detailed documentation. These changes apply to both new applicants and those whose cases are still pending.
According to the Agency, individuals who have received notification letters must now schedule an in-person appointment to verify their identity and complete necessary checks.
New Measures Target Security Threats
The Swedish government has clarified that these measures aim to prevent individuals who may pose a risk to national security—such as those involved in terrorism, violent extremism, or organized crime—from acquiring Swedish citizenship.
Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer emphasized Sweden’s ongoing efforts to defend against “hostile state actors and extremist threats.” Past proposals have included revoking citizenship from dual nationals involved in such activities.
Criminal Records & False Declarations Can Disqualify Applicants
Authorities have warned that applicants who commit crimes or provide false information—including attempts to bribe officials—risk losing their eligibility for citizenship.
A Broader EU Trend
Sweden is not alone. Several EU countries are considering or already implementing tighter rules. Denmark, for example, has proposed screening applicants for anti-democratic views, with officials specifically flagging concerns about ideological extremism.
Danish Minister for Immigration, Kaare Dybvad Bek, stressed the importance of protecting democratic values, stating that some applicants display “totalitarian attitudes” that conflict with national principles.
As Sweden joins other nations in reinforcing citizenship screening, the balance between national security and immigrant integration remains a central issue in European policymaking.
